Scary Highways

You know that all highways scary in one way or another; it may just be your fellow drivers.   I was doing some research on Route 66 and its mystic; during this I found there are some very scary highways.

California Highway one on the Big Sur coast is the first one I found.  It was built in 1920 by convicts using mule teams.  Between Carmel & san Simeon the road put in a white knuckle ride with the steep cliff, ravines that drop off to almost no where.  You have 33 bridges to cross they are many times hanging out in thin air.  I you should have to drive this road from north to south it becomes even scarier, because for safety there is only a thin guardrail.

Hawaii has The Hana Highway, and Haleakala switchbacks.    Saddle road on the big Island is very capable of making you face your fears.  The Saddle road takes you between two volcanoes.

Leaving the warm state of Hawaii, you can take the Dalton Highway in Alaska.  This is the only road that crosses the Arctic Circle.  This road is open year round; the snow and ice in the winter can be a test of driving skills.  The worst that could happen would be to have car trouble.  Not sure AAA will send a truck.

So when planning your next drive consider taking one of these highways.
