Oatman Arizona
A month ago I went for a drive with a friend. He took me to Oatman AZ. I was definitely in an old mining town. It was originally a mining tent camp, until 2 miners struck gold in 1915. The population quickly became 3500.
The town was named for a young girl who was taken by the Mojave Indians. Olive Oatman was found near the town in the year 1857.
The boom for this town in both the size and the mining was not to last long. Many of the shacks burned down in 1921. The United Eastern Mines closed the company. The town survived this loss by the amount of travelers that were using Route 66. The town almost disappeared when in the 6o’s Route 66 became Interstate 40.
Oatman is an interesting place to visit, my friend did not tell me about the burros. The burros are free to roam the streets, visitors are encouraged to feed them carrots. At night they go back to back to the hills.
The Oatman Hotel was built in 1902, Carol Lombard and Clark Gable spent their honeymoon at the hotel. According to the locals Gable returned there many times to enjoy the quiet of the desert, and playing poker with the locals.
After all the shopping and sightseeing, it was a pleasure to go to the Mission Inn, talk to the locals, have a few drinks. The food there is wonderful, best hamburger.
Just another place to spend quality time in the Southwest.
